Dear Beloved Community,
We are with you during this challenging moment; our hearts are breaking as we witness the violence that is being unleashed in many parts of the world—and most recently in the Middle East. The Plum Village Monastic Community, USA, has written a Message to the International Plum Village Community for Peace in the Middle East; we hope this message brings you peace, solace, and compassion during this difficult time.
Our beloved teacher shared timeless wisdom for cultivating true peace in the book Creating True Peace. Though published in 2003, Thay’s proposals are critical for this moment. Here is one of our favorite excerpts.
Earlier in the month, we hosted a retreat called The Buddha The Scientist, where we explored how scientific knowledge and Buddhist wisdom can be combined to create lasting solutions that impact the world. We welcomed 300+ retreat participants, 140 monastics from our U.S. Tour, and 8 scientists to the mountain to explore the intersection of mindfulness and science.
On October 11, we celebrated Thay’s Continuation Day with singing, chanting, and ceremony. We bid adieu to the visiting monastics from Blue Cliff and Magnolia Grove monasteries, bringing the 3-month U.S. Tour to a close. We also welcomed our new Communications & Program Director, Sarah Lane, who shared her experience of her first two days with us at Deer Park.
Join us on the great hidden mountain to welcome home our ancestors and loved ones during our annual Día de los Muertos celebration on Sunday November 5, 2023. We are partnering with local Spanish-speaking practitioners to lead songs, readings, and prayers in Spanish and English for all to celebrate.
Sending you the scent of sweet sage,
